It was a slow drive today. We left the campsite by the lake to head to Austria not really thinking about where we were driving.
Straight away we ended up losing an hour on the road due to traffic jams but we eventually made it out of Germany & into Austria. Slowly we started to climb into the mountains. All okay to start with. The scenery was breathtaking. Driving through valleys with mountains either side, lush open grasslands with air so fresh it made you realise how clogged up the towns in the UK are.
We soon started to climb more steeply. Poor minty was struggling with some of the inclines (14%). She wasn’t the only one. With only trees & sheer drops around us we found ourselves on roads of 1800 metres with no barriers (or no tarmac at all!). For most people this may not pose a problem but for anyone who knows John will know that he suffers terribly from panic attacks. Having a panic attack on a non existent mountain road is not a place he or I would recommend being in. Add the trucks & the lowering cloud into the mix where the roads disappeared just made it even more intimidating.
Eventually we made it to the other side of the mountains & back down to a more acceptable 1000 metres & found somewhere to sleep for the night.
Would we do it again? Not today, but maybe in the future in a car with an engine bigger than 1.2L.
