Day 3

We all woke early from our night sleeping beside the river. Packing up and drinking a quick cup of tea, we started on our way to Hamburg. It was to be another driving day, just trying to make some distance and with any luck make it into Denmark.

It took a while to make it to Hamburg. It took even longer to get out of the city. My navigation skills were on top form and I sent us on a tour around the ports, crossing over ourselves several times. The traffic was made worse by a serious accident on the main road out of the city. An hour or so later we were out of the city and heading North to Denmark.

It was still daylight when we crossed over the border into Denmark. We were now leaving the EU so we were asked to pullover at the border to have our passports checked. The border guard was a friendly soul who was surprised we had driven from the UK. Not as surprised as we were though. Soon after we crossed into Denmark and were driving down the road, the first shop we saw was a discount sex shop! 😂

Our next mission was to find somewhere to sleep. You may have realised that we don’t do much planning for these types of trips. As we never truly know how long it will take us to get from one place to another, we never work out where we are camping in advance. I guess it’s something we both enjoy about our travels, not knowing about what comes next. Although it would be good to occasionally know in advance.

We arrived at a campsite not far from the border but also very close to the Baltic Sea. It was late and no one was around at the campsite for us to check in with. There was a notice on the door informing people that if this happened, we were to find a pitch and check in the morning. So that’s what we did. The tents were soon up and we were cooking dinner.

Even tough it was late once we had finished dinner, we decided to take the short walk to the sea. John’s leg was still swollen so we were hoping that a bit of movement would help the circulation a bit. We really hadn’t expected Johns leg to react to the driving the way it was and to be honest we were getting more concerned.

Finding our way in the dark, we found the shore and a few toads as well. Deciding you cannot stand at the sea shore without at least putting one foot in, I took my shoes off and stood in the sea. As expected it was freezing but I couldn’t whinge, I chose to do it!!

John had been sensible and just carried on looking across the ocean at a boat on the far shore and at me making an idiot of myself. We decided to try and find a different way back to the campsite. We had been convinced that we had seen a gate near where our tents were. Whilst we were tired, John and I decided to try and find the way back. We made it to the main road between the sea and the campsite but now had to find the route to the campsite. I don’t know how, but we started to walk up a track which looked like a driveway to a house and bingo we found the gate to the campsite.

Within minutes we were back at the tents and getting ready for bed.
